Fort Liberia was constructed in addition to strengthening the town walls of Villefranche, in 1681. This detached fort built on Mount Belloc, overlooks the town and wad used to protect the town from above.

Stairway of a thousand stepsFort Liberia can be accessed by foot by walking around the mountain, or via a subterranean stairs "The Stairway of a Thousand Steps", 742 steps actually, which are carved into the mountain and completely covered.

Both roots lead from the town to the Fort so you can take the steps on the way up and the pathway on the way down.

Prades lies at the foot of Mount Canigou, only 3 miles from A Lombre Du Fort and Ville Franche de Conflent.

In springtime, it is a delight to contemplate the landscape where the snows of the Canigou blend with the colours of the orchards in blossom. Prades and its surroundings are rich in natural sites. These settings profoundly inspired Pablo Casals who chose Prades to be his second home. Every year in the summer, the famous composer is remembered during the Pablo Casals Chamber Festival. Other events, such as the Romanesque Days, the Ciné-Rencontres and the Catalan University mark the summer.

Prades has a great cultural heritage, Saint Peter's Church, its Treasure House, la Maison de la Soie ( Silk Museum), la Maison Jourda ( the oldest house in the departement - 14th century) and the two jewellers who create catalan jewellery are just some of the attractions on offer. Prades has all the shops and the services you will need for your holidays. The Prades market is well-known throughout the region and it is the ideal place for a walk and a browse. Here, you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, sold by the local producers, as well as clothing and holiday mementos
